DMU Special 4. A 'Flying Banana' for the 1950s. Text, pictures. (Chris Leigh).
Picture, the 09.27 Princes Risborough-Oxford, formed by DMU 'Flying Banana' No.W12W at Hinksey Bridge, Oxford on 18 July 1953. B/W.
Picture, one of the earlier cars, DMU 'Flying Banana' No.W4W, showing the hinged doors, narrow rectangular vent windows, and the different end styling with the horns placed on the curve and the drawgear above. The outer drive coupling has been removed. B/W.
Picture, DMU 'Flying Banana' No.W16 at Princes Risborough on a working to Oxford via Thame. The details of the livery show clearly. Note that the 'W' suffix was a later addition, and that the cars did not carry any BR emblem. None survived to carry the green livery, although some of the later series (from W19) did so. B/W.
Picture, on 20 March 1960, DMU 'Flying Banana' No.W15W stands at Swindon awaiting scrapping and with most of the skirting panels removed. The cable running from the roof to the window pillar left of the centre door can be seen, as can the recessed glazing of the cab-side window. This car has retained the drive coupling to the outer axle. B/W.
Picture, the prototype DMU 'Flying Banana' No.W14W, showing clearly the horns, steps and destination board. This particular example has extra lamp irons and has lost some skirting panels, but the drive coupling to the outer axle remains in place. B/W.

Picture, tank wagon M707105 was one of only four beer tanks built by the LMS. It was seen in July 1982 while held for possible preservation but has apparently now been broken up. This wagon, with its original lettering intact had been at Exeter diesel depot for some years. B/W.
Picture, a new wagon out of use at Wellingborough in February 1982. This view is well lit by February sunshine and the background is uncluttered. ARC Amey Roadstone. B/W.
Picture, detail of a common style of lettering applied to unfitted Tube wagons when built in 1951. The typeface and white surround are peculiar to these vehicles, and this example was photographed on DB731375 at Luton in July 1980 after thirty years in traffic. B/W.
Picture, some detail pictures of a BR ferry tank. B749671 was lit by the strong low light of September 1982. B/W.
